In the world of shrewd political moves, this one is good.
In the fall of 2005 the legislature passed a bill giving MLAs a 15% pay raise only to have royal assent withheld after the NDP changed their mind. Carole James, at the time, stated that she thought that an independent panel should review the matter and report to the legislature with recommendations.
It took a year and a half, but a panel was put together earlier this year and now they have come out with recommendations. They recommended a pay increase higher than the one proposed in 2005. 29% for MLAs and a whopping 53% for the Premier.
Carole James and the BCNDP caucus wasted no time in rejecting the recommendations of the committee saying that they were "out of step with what is acceptable to British Columbians." This was a smart move because now the BC Liberals lose no matter what they do next. If they accept the findings and use their majority in the House to pass them into law then they will look greedy. If they reject them, they will be seen to be following the lead of the NDP (and Gordo won't get his extra $60,000 a year).

Well, on the other hand maybe you're right, NDP won a bi-election seat on 10 bucks an hour, since the libs could vote themselves a nice fat pay raise, but they couldn't muster up the strength to give minimum wage workers a raise.
Harry Lalli just told CHNL in Kamloops that he'll vote for the pay raise anyway.
