"He seems to be more interested in protecting his job than your job"
-Jack Layton on Stephen Harper trying to avert democracy
BAM!
Jack Layton's speech just blew Harper's out of the water.
Am I allowed to wonder aloud why he can't be PM of the new coalition? Oh whatever, I know, I know...we have to compromise to make the coalition work. It's the best thing for Canada right now. But I'm more proud than ever to call Jack Layton my leader.

Frankly, it blew Dion's statement out of the water too. I really hope Dion's complete ineptitude at public speaking (in English at any rate) doesn't sink this coalition.
I agree Layton did give a great speech.
I liked Dion's speech as well but mostly because it was genuine and not some sorta professionally built thing. Albeit, Dion would've done better to do a live speech like Layton did.
I'd be interested to hear the response to the French version of Dion's speech.
Yeah. Dion comes across as really sincere. He's an honest guy. That's always been his strong point.
I don't think Harper's speech was all that effective. All 4 minutes of it.
Typical that all the major media are only posting the texts of Harper's, Dion's and (at Maclean's) Duceppe's speeches.
Clearly they do not understand that coalition politics are here to stay. And coalitionas are different beasts than mergers, despite the fevered imaginings of some Globe and Mail columnists that I've read of late.
Yeah, I think the coalition needs responses like these to counter the shrill, manipulative and frankly un-Canadian divisiveness emanating from the Conservatives right now.
Dion is a nice guy, and he means well, but in a duel he's not strong enough. Which is why I too would've hoped for Layton leading the coalition temporarily, then have whomever won the Liberal leadership convention succeed him. Hell, if the Liberals were smart two of them would drop out and endorse one of them, who would then be the automatic leader and could get to work on dueling with Harper.
If Paultics is right, it's even worse. Jack won't even be Deputy PM. That position will be filled by a Grit as well.
I support the coalition because I support democracy, but I worry also about the longer term implications of this coalition for the NDP.
My instinct has always been if the Liberals support it, it probably is directed at wiping out the NDP. If you dine with the devil make sure you have a long spoon.
